How Affiliate Marketing Works

  • Join a Program: An affiliate joins a company's affiliate program (e.g., Amazon Associates).
  • Promote a Product: The affiliate promotes the product on their platform (blog, social media, YouTube)
  • Use Unique Links: The affiliate shares a special, unique link provided by the business.
  • Earn Commission: When a customer clicks the link and makes a purchase, the affiliate earns a percentage of the sale

Key Participants

  • The Seller/Advertiser: The company that creates the product or service.
  • The Affiliate/Publisher: The person or entity that promotes the product.
  • The Consumer: The customer who buys the product through the affiliate's link.

Main Types of Compensation

  • Pay per Sale: Commission is earned only after a purchase is made.
  • Pay per Click (PPC): Earnings are based on directing traffic to the company’s site.
  • Pay per Lead (PPL): Commission is earned when a user signs up for something, such as a trial or newsletter.

  • Social Media Influencers: Promoting products on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube.
  • Coupon/Comparison Sites: Comparing prices or offering discounts.

Challenges Faced by Affiliates

  • High Competition: Many affiliates promote similar products, making it hard to stand out.

Future Trends in Affiliate Marketing

What is a Cookie Duration?

When a user clicks an affiliate link, a "cookie" is stored on their device. If they return to buy the product later—often within 24 hours to 90 days, depending on the program—the affiliate still receives the commission.
